Watchdog Files FEC Complaint Against “Decoy” Daniel J. Sullivan in Alaska

Today, Americans for Public Trust (APT) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Daniel J. Sullivan, alleging his campaign coordinated with an outside, liberal dark money group.

Alexandria, VA – Today, Americans for Public Trust (APT) filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Daniel J. Sullivan, alleging his campaign coordinated with an outside, liberal dark money group.

The complaint alleges Daniel J. Sullivan’s campaign and 907 Initiative, an Alaska-based 501(c)(4), engaged in coordinated communications to attack his opponent. As detailed in the complaint, consultant Amber Lee worked for Daniel J. Sullivan for Senate’s campaign while simultaneously serving as a Director and Secretary of 907 Initiative, an outside, liberal dark money group which spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to target Sullivan’s opponent, incumbent U.S. Senator Daniel S. Sullivan.

“It’s unsurprising that a person who is staking his entire candidacy on misleading voters is flouting campaign finance laws in an attempt to give himself an upper hand. Coordinating with outside groups is obviously illegal and 907 Initiative’s efforts result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in prohibited, excessive, and reported campaign contributions. ‘Decoy’ Dan’s campaign should be immediately investigated for this apparent violation.” – Caitlin Sutherland, Executive Director, Americans for Public Trust

Fast Facts:

  • The complaint alleges that Daniel J. Sullivan, his campaign committee, and 907 Initiative engaged in “coordinated communications.”
  • The alleged coordination centers on Amber Lee. Ms. Lee provided campaign and digital consulting services to Daniel J. Sullivan for Senate while simultaneously serving as a Director and Secretary of 907 Initiative, which spent substantial amounts of money on communications targeting incumbent U.S. Senator Dan Sullivan.
    • Ms. Lee helped Daniel J. Sullivan “file to run” at the same time her liberal dark money group, 907 Initiative, was spending hundreds of thousands of dollars attacking incumbent U.S. Senate Daniel Sullivan.
    • Ms. Lee was also paid for website services and digital consulting. Her client’s “logo and color palette are nearly identical” to incumbent U.S. Senator Daniel S. Sullivan.
  • The complaint argues that 907 Initiative’s coordinated expenditures should be treated as in-kind contributions to Sullivan’s campaign, making them potentially prohibited, excessive, and unreported.
