Foreign Funding Ban Signed into Law in Arkansas

Today, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed House Bill 1837 into law banning foreign nationals from contributing to state ballot issue campaigns.

Today, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed House Bill 1837 into law banning foreign nationals from contributing to state ballot issue campaigns.

HB 1837, sponsored by Representative Mindy McAlindon and Senator Kim Hammer, is a straightforward measure that bans foreign nationals and foreign governments from funding state ballot measure campaigns.

In response to the law, Executive Director Caitlin Sutherland issued the following statement:

“Sixteen Thirty Fund, the liberal group funded by foreign billionaire Hansjörg Wyss, has poured $1.3 million into Arkansas to influence the state’s politics. Thanks to Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and the Arkansas legislature, this foreign influence loophole is now closed. Arkansas is the fifth state just this year to pass a ban on the foreign funding of ballot measures, a strong sign that states across the country are acting to secure their elections from foreign interference.”
